I don't own this nor have I used this particular puller, but you MUST put a nut on the threads flush with the end of the shaft to prevent mushrooming the end. Also, just tighten it to where there is pressure on the puller and gently but swiftly give the large "push" bolt a tap with a hammer to pop it.
I believe this was the problem with review below.

This broke a rito crank. The coned shape on the end split a big chunk out of the threads. Whereas the other brand puller has a flatter area to push on the crank.
