Yeah so its like 'black' motorcycle chain which means its just unfinished steel.  I used mineral spirits to clean the goop off the chain and then soaked it overnight in a hot 2 stroke oil bath.  I installed the chain on my Honda MB5 and in order to do so I had to cut a few links off.  I don't have a chain tool, so I just ground off the pins with an angle grinder and used a punch to drive the pins out.  I like really had to hammer on the pin to knock it out.  If i was smarter, I would have measured and cut the chain before I soaked the damn thing in oil...
